George was the son of John H. Kurzenknabe and Susan Shaffer, and brother of John E. Kurzenknabe and Harry Kurzenknabe. He married twice: to Estelle Cook and Emma Schroth (circa 1906).
In March 1890, he was initiated into the Masons in Robert Burns Lodge number 464, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
He held a number of Masonic positions, including a 1913 appointment as organist of the General Grand Chapter. He wrote musical settings for Masonic initiations for Lodge, Chapter, Council, Commandery, Shrine, Scottish Rite, and Eastern Star.
He was also connected with the railway mail service.
