Biography

Christian was the son of Ben­ja­min La­trobe, and fa­ther of Pe­ter La­trobe.

Remembered as a cler­gy­man, mu­si­cian, and com­pos­er, he was edu­cat­ed in Eng­land, and at the Mo­ra­vi­an Breth­ren’s Col­lege, Nies­ky, Si­le­sia.

Taking or­ders in the Mo­ra­vi­an church, he be­came in 1784 sec­re­tary of their So­ci­ety for the Fur­ther­ance of the Gos­pel, and in 1795, sec­re­ta­ry to the Uni­ty of the Breth­ren in Eng­land.

He wrote a num­ber of works for the Mo­ra­vi­an church, and ed­it­ed the Se­lect­ion of Sac­red Mu­sic (six vol­umes, 1806–26).
