Biography

John was the son of Mat­thew Low­rie and Sar­ah An­der­son, and ne­phew of Se­na­tor Wal­ter Low­rie.

He was edu­cat­ed at La­fay­ette Col­lege, Eas­ton, Penn­syl­van­ia (1840); Prince­ton Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry, Prince­ton, New Jer­sey (1843); and Mi­a­mi Uni­ver­si­ty, Ox­ford, Ohio (DD 1858).

Lowrie was li­censed to preach by the New­ton Pres­by­te­ry Ap­ril 27, 1842, and or­dained at Blairs­town, New Jer­sey, Oc­to­ber 18, 1843. He served pas­tor­ates in Blairs­town and Knowl­ton, New Jer­sey (1843–45); Wells­ville, Ohio (1846–50); Lan­cas­ter, Ohio (1850–56); and Fort Wayne, In­di­ana (1856–67).
