Biography

Lowth was edu­cat­ed at Win­ches­ter School and New Col­lege, Ox­ford.

He held a number of posts:

• Professor of Po­et­ry, Uni­ver­si­ty of Ox­ford (1741–52)
• Archdeacon of Win­ches­ter (1750–66)
• Rector of East Wood­hay (1753)
• Prebend of Dur­ham (1755)
• Bishop of St. Da­vid’s (1766)
• Bishop of Lon­don (1777)
• Dean of the Cha­pel Roy­al
• Privy coun­cil­or

He moved to Ox­ford in 1766, and to Lon­don in 1777. In 1783, he de­clined an of­fer to be­come Arch­bi­shop of Can­ter­bu­ry.
