Oram was the son of Louis Clarkson Lyte and Rebecca Martin, and husband of Mary McJunkin (married March 26, 1872).
A civil war veteran, he had a long post-war career as an educator, eventually earning master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
He served as head of the Millersville Normal School (now Millersville University), and as president of both of the Pennsylvania Teachers Association and the National Education Association.
