Daniel was the son of Samuel March and Zoa Park.
He attended the Millbury Academy and Amherst College (1834–36), taught for two years at the Chester [Vermont] Academy, then entered Yale University, graduating in 1843.
Ordained a Congregational minister in 1845, he served in Presbyterian and Congregational churches. He had an intense interest in missions, and was known for lecturing on his world travels.
