Daniel was the son of Samuel March and Zoa Park. He married twice, to Jane Parker Gilson (1841) and Anna Brooks (1859).
He attended the Millbury Academy and Amherst College (1834–36), taught for two years at the Chester [Vermont] Academy, then entered Yale University, graduating in 1843.
Ordained a Congregational minister in 1845, he served in Presbyterian and Congregational churches. He had an intense interest in missions, and was known for lecturing on his world travels.
