Biography

McGarvey was the son of John Wil­liam Mc­Gar­vey, Sr., and Ot­way­an­na Fran­ces Hix, and hus­band of Fan­ny Tay­lor. His fa­ther was a min­is­ter like his son, with whom he is oft­en con­fused.

John Jr. served as pre­si­dent of the Ma­di­son In­sti­tute, a la­dies’ board­ing school in Rich­mond, Ken­tuc­ky.
