Mélanie was the daughter of Isaac Elie Rochat (1800–1867), a justice of the peace, and Isaline Rochat.
When she was two years old, her parents sent her to stay with a childless aunt, Madame Lacombe-Rochat, in Lausanne, where she grew up.
