Edward was the son of composer John Naylor.
He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (BA 1887, MusB & MA 1891, MusD 1897), and entered the Royal College of Music in 1888.
He served as organist of St. Michael’s Church, Chester Square, Belgravia, London (1889); St. Mary’s, Kilburn (1896–97); and Emmanuel College, Cambridge; and as assistant master at Leys School, Cambridge.
