Born: June 8, 1838, Stan­ning­ley, Pud­sey, West York­shire, Eng­land.

Died: May 15, 1897, while sail­ing to Aus­tra­lia.

Buried: At sea, be­tween Te­ne­rife and the Cape of Good Hope.

Biography

John was the fa­ther of com­pos­er Ed­ward Nay­lor.

He stu­died un­der Robert Bur­ton, and be­came or­gan­ist at Scar­bo­rough in 1856, and at York Min­ster in 1883.

He was elect­ed an hon­or­ary mem­ber of the Roy­al Aca­de­my of Mu­sic in 1895.
