Sydney was the son of Charles Nicholson, 1st Baronet, and Sarah Elizabeth Keightley.
He attended Rugby School; New College, Oxford; and the Royal College of Music. He founded and directed the Royal School of Church Music. In 1927, he founded the School of English Church Music.
