Biography

A leader of Swed­ish Lu­ther­an­ism, Olav­us and his brother Laur­en­ti­us studied at Wit­ten­berg, Ger­ma­ny, and were in­flu­enc­ed by Mar­tin Lu­ther.

After Swe­den re­ceived in­de­pen­dence from Den­mark, King Gus­tav­us Va­sa made Olav­us a pas­tor and ci­ty coun­cil­man in Stock­holm. How­ev­er, the king wanted to con­trol the church, and was oft­en in con­flict with Petri.

The king ev­en went so far as to con­demn Pe­tri to death, but lat­er par­doned him.

Works

Petri wrote Swed­ish trans­la­tions of the New Tes­ta­ment and the La­tin mass, and a ca­te­chism.
