Born: May 4, 1860, Claverack, New York.
Plass was educated at the Hudson Academy, Hudson, New York; Williams College (BA 1882, MA 1885, DD 1904), Williamstown, Massachusetts; and Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (BD 1886).
Ordained in 1885, he held pastorates at the Reformed (Dutch) Church, Shodack, New York; the Congregational Church, Detroit, Michigan; in Lincoln, Nebraska; Medina and Cincinnati, Ohio; and Barrington, Rhode Island.
He was also state superintendent of the Rhode Island Anti-Saloon League, superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League of Greater New York, and assistant state superintendent (1897–99).
In 1900, he was in the field for the national Congregational Home Missionary Society.
In 1901, he was elected professor of Theism and Christian Evidences, and Financial Agent at Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas; he served as president of Washburn (1902–08).
