Caradog was the son of John and Margaret Roberts, and husband of Laura Pritchard (married 1912).
He started out as an apprentice carpenter with Jenkins and Jones, but soon decided his gifts lay in the musical field.
He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Oxford University in 1906, and Doctor of Music in 1911, the youngest Welshman to do so.
He served throughout Wales as a conductor, judge, and organist. He was the Director of Music at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, until 1920, and played the organ at Bethlehem, Rhos.
