Biography

Smith was the son of Ca­the­rine and Ne­he­mi­ah Hen­ry Smith. He mar­ried twice, to Ka­tie Jo­se­phine Black and Chris­tine Shoe­craft.

Smith was or­dained in the Af­ri­can Me­tho­dist Epis­co­pal (AME) Church around 1870, ris­ing to the post of bi­shop in 1900. The AME elect­ed Smith as Church His­to­rio­gra­pher in 1920.

Smith served in the Ala­ba­ma state le­gis­la­ture, 1874–76.
