Smith was the son of Catherine and Nehemiah Henry Smith. He married twice, to Katie Josephine Black and Christine Shoecraft.
Smith was ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church around 1870, rising to the post of bishop in 1900. The AME elected Smith as Church Historiographer in 1920.
Smith served in the Alabama state legislature, 1874–76.
