Blind from age two, Stan­ley stu­died mu­sic un­der J. Read­ing and M. Greene at Ox­ford (BMus 1729).

He played the or­gan at All Hal­lows’, Bread Street (1724); St. An­drew’s, Hol­born (1726–86); and at the Tem­ple Church (from 1739).

He be­came Mas­ter of the Roy­al Band of Mu­sic in 1729.
