Biography

Evan was the son of Da­vid Ste­phens and Jane Ev­ans.

He emi­grat­ed to Salt Lake Ci­ty in 1866. He di­rect­ed the vo­cal mu­sic prog­ram at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ut­ah (1885–1900), and the Mor­mon Ta­ber­na­cle Choir (1890–1916).

He is re­mem­bered for his con­tri­bu­tions to the cul­tur­al growth of the state of Utah, his lead­er­ship of the Mor­mon Ta­ber­na­cle Choir, and for com­pos­ing nu­mer­ous hymns and songs.
