Ambrose was the son of William Vernon and Rebecca Peace White, and husband of Kathe Tappe (married May 22, 1896, Wernigerode, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany)
He graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, in 1907.
He was pastor of Harvard Congregational Church, Brookline, Massachusetts (as of 1917) and the Congregational Church of Hanover; Professor of Biblical Literature, Dartmouth College; Professor of Biography, Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota (1919–24); and Professor of Homiletics, Yale Divinity School.
