Jones was the son of Captain Jones and Lydia Very, and brother of Lydia Very.
He graduated from Harvard College in 1836, then stayed there as Greek tutor for two years.
He became a Unitarian minister in 1843, but never held a pastorate. He was later institutionalized in an insane asylum.
