William was the son of James Hahn Walter and Mary Cheetham, and husband of Elizabeth Woolley Ham.
He studied music under Edward Hodges, and played the organ at the Church of the Epiphany; St. John’s Chapel; St. Paul’s Chapel; and Trinity Chapel, New York City.
He received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Columbia University in 1864.
