Biography

William was the son of James Hahn Wal­ter and Ma­ry Cheet­ham, and hus­band of Eli­za­beth Wool­ley Ham.

He stu­died mu­sic un­der Ed­ward Hodg­es, and played the or­gan at the Church of the Epi­pha­ny; St. John’s Cha­pel; St. Paul’s Cha­pel; and Tri­ni­ty Cha­pel, New York Ci­ty.

He re­ceived an hon­or­ary Doc­tor of Mu­sic de­gree from Co­lum­bia Uni­ver­si­ty in 1864.
