David was the son of Alvin Way and Louisa Slayton, and husband of Marilda Eliza Rilla
Dunton.
During the American civil war, he served in Company F, 28th Iowa Infantry. He caught a severe case of measles, and after losing 75 pounds, he was medically discharged in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in June 1863.
He taught hundreds of violin students, and played first violin with the Grinnell College Orchestra.
He apparently owned a music store in Syracuse, Nebraska, as of 1889.
If you know where to get a good photo of Way (head & shoulders, at least 200×300 pixels),
