Lewis was the son of L. B. White, vicar of St. Mary Aldermary in London, and husband of Elizabeth Wilson.
He was ordained an Anglican priest in 1844, and served as curate of Cromer, Norfolk. In 1934, he became honorary canon of Norwich Cathedral.
He was a gifted organist, and gave frequent recitals.
