Lotta was the daughter of Robert Amanthus White and Anna Louisa Bolender.
After graduating from college, she taught in public schools for a few years.
She eventually moved into the religious field, teaching Sunday school, serving as county organizer for the Christian Endeavor Union, and working in missions in New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
She also studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois.
