George was the son of merchant and ship owner Sir Robert Wigram. He married twice, to Fanny Bligh (1830), and Catherine Maria Parnell (after 1833). His brother James became a Vice-Chancellor, and his brother Joseph was Bishop of Rochester.
George was associated with the Plymouth Brethren, and was a friend of John Nelson Darby.
