Died: June 3, 1898, Riverdale, New York.
George, was the son of Asa Waldo Wildes and Eliza Ann Lunt, and husband of Harriette Howard, daughter of Benjamin Howard of Boston.
He was educated at Harvard, and the Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria.
He was ordained a deacon in 1846 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and at the same time was invited to the professorship of mathematics at Shelby College, Shelbyville, Kentucky.
After holding several charges, he became assistant at St. Paul’s, Boston, and was afterward at Brookline.
In 1859 he became the first rector of Grace Church, Salem, Massachusetts, where he stayed until 1867. While at Salem, he became a member of the State Board of Education.
At the outset of the American civil war, he was instrumental in raising the 19th and 23d Massachusetts regiments. He also formed the field hospital corps, and was commissioned its chaplain.
In 1867, he became rector of Christ Church, Riverdale, New York.
Wildes wrote numerous sermons and addresses, and edited and translated several volumes.
