Died: June 3, 1898, Ri­ver­dale, New York.

Biography

George, was the son of Asa Wal­do Wil­des and Eli­za Ann Lunt, and hus­band of Har­ri­ette How­ard, daugh­ter of Ben­ja­min How­ard of Bos­ton.

He was edu­cat­ed at Har­vard, and the Vir­gin­ia Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry, Al­ex­an­dria.

He was or­dained a dea­con in 1846 in New Bed­ford, Mas­sa­chu­setts, and at the same time was in­vit­ed to the pro­fess­or­ship of ma­the­ma­tics at Shel­by Col­lege, Shel­by­ville, Ken­tuc­ky.

After hold­ing se­ve­ral charg­es, he be­came as­sist­ant at St. Paul’s, Boston, and was af­ter­ward at Brook­line.

In 1859 he be­came the first rec­tor of Grace Church, Sa­lem, Mas­sa­chu­setts, where he stayed un­til 1867. While at Sa­lem, he be­came a mem­ber of the State Board of Edu­ca­tion.

At the out­set of the Am­eri­can ci­vil war, he was in­stru­ment­al in rais­ing the 19th and 23d Mas­sa­chu­setts re­gi­ments. He al­so formed the field hos­pital corps, and was com­mis­sioned its chap­lain.

In 1867, he be­came rec­tor of Christ Church, Ri­ver­dale, New York.

Works

Wildes wrote nu­mer­ous ser­mons and ad­dresses, and ed­it­ed and trans­lat­ed se­ver­al vol­umes.
