Elizabeth was the daughter of hymnist Christopher Wordsworth and Susanna Hatley Frere, and great-niece of poet William Wordsworth.
In 1879, she became the founding principal of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. In 1886, she used an inheritance from her father to found St Hugh’s College, in north Oxford.
