Wortman was the son of Denis Wortman and Elizabeth Brinkerhoff Rapalje.
He graduated from Amherst College (AB 1857) and the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, New Jersey (1860).
He held pastorates in Brooklyn, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Schenectady, New York; Fort Plain, New York; and for many years at the Reformed Church in Saugerties, New York.
He also served as secretary of ministerial relief and president of the General Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church (1901).
