Biography

Hugh was the son of min­is­ter R. B. Bourne.

He was ed­ucat­ed at Eton and Christ Church, Ox­ford (BA 1863, BCL 1866, DCL 1871).

Taking Ho­ly Or­ders in 1863, he served as as­sist­ant cur­ate of Sand­ford-on-Thames (1863–65).

He was head mas­ter of St. An­drew’s Chard­stock (1866–74). As of 1886 he was war­den of that school, which was trans­ferred to St. Ed­mund’s, Sal­is­bu­ry (1874–85).

He was chap­lain to the bish­op of Bloem­fon­tein, South Af­ri­ca (1879–98); sub-dean of Sal­is­bury Ca­thed­ral (1887–1901); and trea­sur­er and pre­ben­da­ry of Sal­is­bury Ca­thed­ral (1901).
