Henry was the son of Henry Alcock Bramley and Elizabeth Cooper.
He matriculated at Oriel College, Oxford, in 1852; was a Scholar of University College, 1853; and Fellow of Magdalen College, 1857 (BA 1856, MA 1859).
Ordained an Anglican deacon in 1856 and priest in 1858, he served as vicar of Horspath, Oxfordshire (1861–89) and canon and precentor of Lincoln (1895–1905).
