John was the son of John Codman (1755–1803) and Margaret Russell, and husband of Mary Wheelwright (married 1813).
He was educated at Andover Academy (now Phillips Academy Andover) and Harvard College (now Harvard University), 1798–1802.
In 1803, he began studying theology under Henry Ware. In 1808, he was ordained as first minister of the Second Church in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
