Louis was the husband of Adele T. Coerne.
He is remembered as a composer, conductor, teacher, holder of the first American PhD degree in music, and composer of the first American opera performed in Europe (Zenobia, 1905).
He directed the University of Wisconsin School of Music (1910–15), and taught at the Connecticut College for Women (1915–22).
