Died: March 16, 1649, Wau­bau­shene, On­ta­rio, Ca­na­da (killed by In­di­ans).

Buried: Church of Saint Jo­seph at Sainte Ma­rie Among the Hur­ons, near Mid­land, On­tar­io, Ca­na­da.

Biography

De Bré­beuf be­came a Je­su­it in 1617, and in 1625 found­ed a mis­sion at Iho­na­ti­ria (lo­ca­tion un­cer­tain; var­ied sourc­es give it as on Geor­gian Bay, Lake Hur­on, or on the south­east­ern edge of Lake Mi­chi­gan).

Despite fierce op­po­si­tion from some In­di­ans, he con­tinued to preach, and made a num­ber of In­di­an con­verts.
