Haywood lived most of his life in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was the only prominent black Pentecostal preacher in the Finished Work branch of the movement, which became the Assemblies of God and the Pentecostal Church of God.
He eventually became associated with an unorthodox group that denied the Trinity and left the Assemblies of God for the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, where he became the first presiding bishop.
