Mahaffey’s name is some­times shown with the ti­tle Pro­fes­sor, in­di­cat­ing he was prob­ab­ly a teach­er.

From around 1877–82, he ed­it­ed and pub­lished a month­ly called The Mu­sic­al Ad­vo­cate in Al­too­na, Penn­syl­van­ia.
