In 1921, he became Missionary Secretary for the China Inland Mission of the Methodist Church. From 1923–24, he and his wife Minnie made a worldwide trip on behalf of the church, visiting hospitals, schools, leper colonies, and congregations across Japan, China, India and southern Africa.
Olmstead also served on the commission that produced the Free Methodist Hymnal (Winona Lake, Indiana: Free Methodist Publishing House, 1910).
