Late 19th Century
Stephen J. Perry

Biography

Perry’s name is sometimes given with the prefix Prof[essor], indicating he was probably a teacher.

Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence tool reports his full name was Stephen J. Perry, part of the Perry Brothers publishing house, a short-lived but active firm primarily based in Dalton, Georgia and Boaz, Alabama, around the turn of the 20th Century. Also from Gemini:

In academic works that catalog the Sunday School Music era, researchers often use [Perry’s] full name to provide a complete biographical record.…In formal library cataloging for the Showalter Music Company, his name is often spelled out to differentiate him from other contributors in the Perry family…In the Bibliography of Black Music (Vol. 4) or similar indices of 19th-century American composers, he is listed as Stephen J. Perry to link his identity across multiple publishing houses (like Biglow & Main vs. The Perry Brothers).
