Daniel, an Evangelical minister, was the son of Charles Cupp Poling and Savilla Ann Kring. He married twice: to Susie Vandersall (September 25, 1906, Summit, Ohio), and Mrs. Lillian Diebold Heingartner (1919, Manhattan, New York).
He ran as a Prohibition (anti-alcohol) candidate for governor of Ohio 1912. In the 1920s, he ran a popular NBC radio program. He edited the Christian Herald (1925–65), and headed several Christian charities.
