A pianist, composer and conductor, Rubinstein founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He is also remembered as the composition teacher of Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
His elder brother, Nikolai Rubinstein, founded the Moscow Conservatory.
Anton Rubinstein was well known for his series of historical recitals—seven consecutive concerts covering the history of piano music. He played this series throughout Russia, Eastern Europe and America.
