Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying,
1 Samuel 7:12Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.

Another year of life is gone?
Thus far thy God has helped thee on.
On mercies past, as years roll by,
Look back, my soul with grateful eye,
And now, once more, rejoice to raise
Thy Ebenezer to His praise!
The unknown future lies before;
Its secrets seek not to explore.
Onward and upward tread the road
From day to day marked out by God.
Faint, yet pursuing, thou shalt see,
That as thy day thy strength shall be.
And when thy steps draw nearer home,
Fear not; the promised sign will come,
At evening time it shall be light,
To chase the gloom from death’s short night,
Which swift as thought shall pass away,
Dissolved in everlasting day!
