Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Psalm 51:10
Words: Mary F. Bigelow, 1891.
Music: Elisha A. Hoffman (🔊 pdf nwc).
If you know where to get a good photo of Bigelow (head & shoulders, at least 200×300 pixels),
I cannot change my sinful heart,
Nor make it pure and sweet,
But I can do what is my part:
Bring it to Jesus’ feet.
Refrain
At Jesus’ blessèd feet,
My soul’s divine retreat,
I find the needed help each day
To walk the narrow way.
I cannot even half repent
Of deeds that have been wrong,
But I can turn about and leave
The path I’ve traveled long.
Refrain
I cannot keep this newfound way
In my own human strength,
But I can trust in Him whose power
Will conquer sin at length.
Refrain
I cannot bring my life to Christ
By my desires alone,
But I can tell my wish to God,
And bind it to His throne.
Refrain
Perhaps I may not serve Him long,
My days may soon be done;
But I can give each day to Him
With every rising morn.
