Allan was the son of Ira Sankey and Frances Victoria Edwards. He married twice, to Frances Wann (1899) and Ann Underhill Meighan (1915).
He studied civil engineering and architecture at Princeton University, graduating in 1897.
In 1898, he became president of the Biglow & Main music publishers in New York City. He also served as vice-president of the Leeds and Catlin Phonograph Company, and on the Advisory Board of the Greenich [sic] Bank.
