You will not fear the terror of night.
Psalm 91:5
Words: Steingrímur Thorsteinsson (1831–1913). Translated from Icelandic to English by Jakobina Johnson (1883–1977).
Music: Soldau Geystliche Gesangk Buchleyn (Wittenberg, Germany: 1524) (🔊 pdf nwc).
If you know the original Icelandic title,
The fading day adorns the west
And calls our waiting world to rest;
Thou Lord of light and all we know,
Thy calm and peace on us bestow.
O Lord, as silent shadows fall,
Thy loving-kindness shield us all;
And for Thy children near and far
Set out o’er each a golden star.
Of Thy protecting hand aware,
May all in sleep invite Thy care;
And, strength renewed and darkness gone,
Behold with joy the light of dawn.
