Byers was the son of Andrew Byers (1827–1899) and song writer Nancy Byers, husband of Della Florence Wickersham (married May 19, 1895, Ohio), brother of Jacob Byers, and father of Luella Byers Henry.
In 1890, he joined Daniel Warner and Barney Warren in evangelistic work, and the next year was hired by the Gospel Trumpet Publishing Company as music editor.
He left the company in 1922 for health reasons, and worked as an evangelist and pastor in Idaho & Oregon before taking a pastorate in Sacramento, California, in 1934.
