Biography

August married twice: to So­phie Bie­wend (1867) and Ka­ther­ine Ag­nes John (1896).

A pro­fess­or, hym­no­lo­gist, hymn trans­la­tor and au­thor, he at­tend­ed Con­cor­dia Col­lege in St. Lou­is, Mis­sou­ri, and Fort Wayne, In­di­ana, gra­du­at­ing in 1862.

He served as as­sist­ant pas­tor of Tri­ni­ty Church, Mil­wau­kee, Wisconsin (1865); pas­tor in Grand Ra­pids, Mi­chi­gan (1871–73); and in­struct­or of Ger­man and French at Con­cor­dia Col­lege, Fort Wayne, In­di­ana.
