A professor, hymnologist, hymn translator and author, he attended Concordia College in St. Louis, Missouri, and Fort Wayne, Indiana, graduating in 1862.
He served as assistant pastor of Trinity Church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1865); pastor in Grand Rapids, Michigan (1871–73); and instructor of German and French at Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
